South Carolina VA Aid & Attendance — FundingDependency.com

Aid and Attendance is a VA pension addition

The Department of Veterans Affairs describes Aid and Attendance as a monthly payment added to VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors. The VA lists needing help with daily activities, being bedridden, living in a nursing home because of disability-related loss of ability, and specified severe visual impairment among the qualifying situations. A person cannot receive both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time (VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound).

VA eligibility, Medicaid eligibility, and a State Veterans Home admission are separate decisions. A VA award letter is important evidence of income and benefit type, but it does not replace a Healthy Connections Medicaid application or an SCDHHS level-of-care finding. Families should provide the actual award documentation to the Medicaid worker rather than assume the benefit is automatically excluded or automatically countable.
