Mississippi’s 2026 institutional resource limit is $4,000

For a single person applying for Mississippi nursing-facility Medicaid or the comparable institutional/HCBS financial category, DOM’s 2026 chart lists a liberalized resource limit of $4,000. DOM’s companion eligibility page also says that an individual may have total resources up to $4,000, while stressing that resource rules distinguish countable assets from excluded property (DOM Appendix A-2, revised January 1, 2026; DOM eligibility page).

DOM describes resources as real or personal assets a person owns that can help meet basic needs. Its public guidance identifies examples of exclusions and conditions, including one automobile, household goods, qualifying burial spaces, and a primary home subject to the state’s home-equity rule. Classification and ownership details therefore matter; an account balance alone does not settle whether a particular item is countable (DOM eligibility page).

Income, the home, and a community spouse

Mississippi is an income-cap state for institutional and HCBS long-term-care eligibility. The 2026 institutional income maximum is $2,982 per month before deductions. DOM says a nursing-facility resident above that limit may be able to use an Income Trust, subject to its rules, rather than treating excess income as an ordinary spend-down (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide).

One primary residence may be excluded, but DOM’s 2026 guide says the exclusion is available unless home equity exceeds $752,000. The current institutional chart identifies $752,000 as the federal equity-minimum limit used by DOM. A home can involve residence, equity, title, transfer, and future recovery questions at the same time, so this figure is an eligibility threshold rather than permission to retitle property without advice (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide; DOM Appendix A-2).

When one spouse receives long-term care and the other remains in the community, DOM says the community spouse is entitled to keep up to $162,660 in combined countable resources effective January 1, 2026, with the applicant’s share up to $4,000. The current chart confirms the $162,660 federal community-spouse resource maximum. DOM’s current chart also lists a maximum community-spouse monthly maintenance needs allowance of $4,066.50. The located chart did not state a current minimum CSRA, so a case-specific DOM assessment is important (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide; DOM Appendix A-2).
