Ohio Veterans Homes offer a state-operated option
The Ohio Department of Veterans Services operates Ohio Veterans Home facilities in Sandusky and Georgetown. ODVS describes Sandusky as having nursing-home and domiciliary services, while Georgetown provides nursing-facility care (Ohio Department of Veterans Services, Georgetown; ODVS 2024 Annual Report).
ODVS states that honorably discharged Ohio-resident wartime veterans who are disabled and unable to earn a living are generally eligible for admission. Individual admission and care needs should be confirmed directly with ODVS (ODVS admission information).
Medicaid coordination point: Ohio distinguishes initial eligibility from patient liability. Aid & Attendance is excluded at initial SIL eligibility, while the post-eligibility rule describes an exclusion of up to $90/month for qualifying nursing-facility or HCBS residents (
OAC initial-income rule;
OAC patient-liability rule).
The disabled-veteran homestead figure needs direct confirmation
Ohio law provides an enhanced homestead exemption for qualifying veterans with a 100% VA service-connected disability rating or total disability based on individual unemployability, with continued treatment for a qualifying surviving spouse until death or remarriage. The statutory base is $50,000 of true value, adjusted annually (Ohio Revised Code § 323.152).
Published materials conflict on the certified tax-year 2025 adjusted amount, citing $56,000 or $58,000, while HB 96 introduced a $100,000 income-capped tier for qualifying veterans with income not exceeding $125,000. The interaction between the existing exemption and the newer tier is unresolved in the materials reviewed, so confirm the current figure directly with the Ohio Department of Taxation or the county auditor (Ohio Legislature HB 96 fiscal note; Ohio Revised Code § 323.152).
Coordinate benefits before making a transfer
Veterans benefits, Medicaid eligibility, patient liability, tax relief, and estate planning can apply different definitions and timelines. Get advice that addresses the particular benefit and care setting before changing assets or applying.
